Durham County Library completes migration to AM Quartex with launch of new North Carolina Collection
Created and launched using the powerful and intuitive AM Quartex platform, Durham County Library’s newly-published collection provides unprecedented digital access to the library’s diverse material. With the ability to create more engaging exhibits and unique ways of presenting this vital community material, the migration from an open-source platform to Quartex comprised 76 collections with the addition of new content not previously available.
Key for the Durham County Library team was the ease of use of AM Quartex for both the library and end users. Lauren Panny, Head of the North Carolina Collection, commented on the simple and straightforward migration process, “The batch uploader made the ingest process very quick and the Quartex-supplied metadata templates were easy to use, even with our existing metadata structure.”
Panny commented further on the end user experience, adding “Users will now be able to enjoy enhanced search features and new points of discovery, such as browsing by topic. We are also excited to present a re-design of our digital exhibit, ‘The History of Stanford L. Warren Branch Library’.”
Accomplished in under six months, with the guidance and support of AM’s Customer Experience team, the site presents collections using individual list pages, which link to and from landing pages and key resources. It also includes extensive use of OCR and AV transcription. The team were then able to leverage the platform to convert transcription metadata from CSV for upload as individual TXT files for enhanced display alongside the asset.
With a focus on North Carolina and Durham’s rich history, the library has maintained the integrity of each collection, utilising thematic grouping within their site with enhanced subject terms. The team were then able to perform metadata cleanup using the controlled vocabulary tools, expanding on the discoverability Quartex provides.
