From whalemen to pirates: researching everyday life at sea through primary sources

We were joined by Hester Blum of Pennsylvania State University to take a deep dive into the everyday lives of those aboard nineteenth century whaling vessels. In addition, we heard about the role of criminal justice in the lives of sailors through the documents of the High Court of Admiralty with Richard Blakemore of the University of Reading. Through the use of AM’s Life at Sea primary source collection, the speakers explored the lives lived on the high seas during the Age of Sail—and the value of incorporating primary sources into the research workflow.
