Adam Matthew is a digital publisher of online primary source collections working at the forefront of research with leading universities, archives and scholars from around the world. The results are creative resources that offer powerful research and dynamic teaching for universities, colleges and libraries.

As early adopters of the latest technologies, Adam Matthew and their technology partners are able to provide technical solutions that are considered the best in the field: creative, imaginative and using cutting edge technical concepts to produce online solutions that are scalable, intuitive and user friendly.

The end result is a large and expanding suite of projects built on a C# ASP.Net and MVC3 based framework; supported by an infrastructure of bespoke back-end systems and data processes.

As a result of continued expansion we are looking to hire an experienced Developer who combines a passion for technology with a demonstrable interest in the fields of social sciences, history, literature or the arts.

The opportunity on offer for the right person is extremely exciting. Working as part of a supportive team, your involvement in a project will begin at the design phase and will span the development lifecycle, testing, go-live and include post implementation Support and Feedback.

You will be working as part of an in-house technical team, and collaborating closely with third-party design houses and technology partners. You will also work closely with the editorial staff and assist with the editorial production process. The nature of the work is fast paced and will suit an individual who can adapt to a constantly evolving set of priorities.

Adam Matthew has a customer base spanning Europe, the US, Asia and Australasia, and is part of the SAGE Group which has offices in London, Los Angeles, Singapore and Washington DC. 

Mandatory Skills and Experience:

  • Applicants could come from a number of different backgrounds
  • You will have previous commercial experience in a Software / Web development 
  • All applicants, irrespective of background will need to be able to demonstrate essential skills:
  • You will be able to demonstrate genuine experience of ASP.Net or MVC.Net or be an experienced developer and be able to articulate your interest in developing for the web.
  • You will have a very logical approach to problem solving, couple with a good eye for detail.
  • You will have excellent communication skills and be highly motivated.
  • Adam Matthew Digital's area of specialisation is historical documentation and candidates will need to share the companies and customers enthusiasm for the subject material.

Additional requirements:

The UK office is based in Marlborough in Wiltshire. The successful candidate must be happy to relocate to the area or have their own transport to commute to the office. The office is easily reached from the M4 and is commutable from much of the M4 corridor including: Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Reading.

Global Commodities

Documented through a wide range of manuscript materials, maps, posters, paintings, photographs, ephemera, objects and rare books so that the student can explore the origins of the commodity, their first uses, the trade that developed and the ways in which these items were marketed and consumed.

Guided by a board of leading international scholars the project also offers interactive data maps, commodity data visualisation, extensive image galleries, detailed interactive chronology and museum objects, many in 360⁰ versions that can be rotated.

Victorian Popular Culture

Moving Pictures, Optical Entertainments and the Advent of Cinema provides thorough coverage of Victorian and Edwardian visual entertainments, early optics, magic lantern shows, panoramas, dioramas, early photography, and early motion pictures. Objects, ephemera, books and journals allow a broad range of approaches to teaching and research.

The source material is drawn from the outstanding collections of the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum. Based at the University of Exeter, the Centre is recognised as a world-class archival collection, and the UK’s largest research centre for the history of international cinema.
