Adam Matthew Provides Temporary Free Access to Interactive Gettysburg Map
Throughout July to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Adam Matthew is providing free temporary access to Mapping Gettysburg – an interactive map placing historic photographs, letters and diaries on a map of the battlefield, contained within award-winning digital primary source collection, American History, 1493-1945.
Mapping Gettysburg, developed in collaboration with Axis Maps, allows users to explore eyewitness accounts and responses to the battle, discover photographs and biographies of men who fell and contrast historic images of the battlefield with modern views of the site as it is today, preserved by the Gettysburg National Military Park.
The Battle of Gettysburg, fought in Pennsylvania over the first three days of July 1863, is often considered the turning point of the American Civil War. The battle has been called the “high-water mark” of the Confederacy. After three days of fierce fighting, around 50,000 of the 150,000 men engaged had become casualties, making the Battle of Gettysburg one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.
