AM partners with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute on new collection
AM is delighted to announce a partnership with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) to digitise several archival collections, to be featured in the forthcoming collection, Latin American Communities in the United States.
The project is part of a wider initiative led by AM to digitise and bring together archives produced by and for Latino/a/x peoples from across the country. The resource will be a central repository for scholars to access and cross-search primary sources, supported by contextual essays, video interviews and features exploring the history of Latino/a/x activism and culture. Focusing on the latter half of the twentieth century, the resource highlights grassroots movements both at a local and national level, including shared campaigns amongst Latino/a/x communities in the fight for civil rights.
CUNY DSI will be contributing the papers of prominent community leaders and activists in New York, including those of Juan A. Paulino, Normandia Maldonado, Luisa Ruíz, and Bienvenido Lara Flores.
The partnership with AM is the perfect vehicle for CUNY DSI, as it enables us to share the unique experience of US Dominicans with the larger world, while also helping us in the current effort of bringing Dominicans closer to each other through sharing and preserving their cultural legacy, despite the distance and the oceans that may separate them.
We envision Latin American Communities in the United States as a landmark resource within the field, and we're honoured and excited to work with the Dominican Studies Institute to digitise and make their collections more widely available to the online research community.
Founded in 1992 and housed at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York (CUNY DSI) is the nation's first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the world. CUNY DSI's mission is to produce and disseminate research and scholarship about Dominicans and the Dominican Republic. CUNY DSI is the locus for a community of scholars, including doctoral fellows, in the field of Dominican Studies and sponsors multidisciplinary research projects. The Institute houses the Dominican Archives, the first and only of its kind outside of the Dominican Republic, dedicated to preserving the records reflecting the experiences of Dominicans in the US, and the Dominican Library, the largest depository of bibliographical resources in the US related to Dominican Studies.
