FROM TWENTY-SIX ARCHIVES ACROSS THE GLOBE
(Marlborough, UK – Wednesday 30th August 2017) Migration to New Worlds charts the emigration experience of millions across 200 years of turbulent history, bringing together digitised material from twenty-six archives around the globe. Publication of Module II: The Modern Era marks the completion of this vast resource for teaching and research.
Continuing on from Module I: The Century of Immigration, Module II: The Modern Era begins with the activities of the New Zealand Company during the 1840s. Sources then lead on to the growth of colonisation companies, activities of immigration and welfare societies, the experience of later generations, and the plight of refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War.

Selected in collaboration with participating archives and a specialist academic editorial board, materials digitised in full colour include papers from Stephen F. Austin, the ‘Father of Texas’ discussing the American settlement of Texas, together with pamphlets, government reports and ephemera encouraging immigration to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.
Oral histories, objects and accounts document personal reflections on European migration experiences, whilst interactive features including a convict database, offer contextualising research opportunities. Users are also invited to watch a new video interview on 'Migrants at Sea' with Professor John Belchem discussing shipping lines, journey conditions, dangers and how emigration was affected by global conflict in the 20th century.
