‘American Indian Histories and Cultures’ Wins Choice ‘Outstanding Academic Title 2014’

Award is a double-win for Adam Matthew and the Newberry Library, Chicago

Adam Matthew today announced American Indian Histories and Cultures (AIHC), a major digital resource sourced exclusively from the renowned Edward E. Ayer Collection at the Newberry Library in Chicago, has been selected for inclusion in Choice’s annual ‘Outstanding Academic Title’ (OAT) list.

“Comprising almost 9 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less than 3 percent of the more than 25,000 titles submitted to Choice during the same period, ‘Outstanding Academic Titles are truly the best of the best.” - CHOICE

AIHC spans an extensive time period from early contact to the mid-20th century. It provides unprecedented coverage with a diverse range of material, including rare manuscripts, newspapers, artwork, maps, speeches and pictures. All the material is presented with detailed metadata, allowing access to unrivaled source material for the study of westward expansion and the American Indian experience.

“In breadth and depth of primary sources, AIHC surpasses Infobase Publishing’s ‘American Indian History Online’, ABC-CLIO’s ‘The American Indian Experience’, and a plethora of open-access sites that focus on either a specific type of primary resource, geographic area, or topic.”
- M. J. Cedar Face, CDL, Southern Oregon University for Choice, March 2014

Researchers will find many significant and rare items within AIHC, including:

  • An original copy of ‘The Red Man’s Greeting’ (1893) – a booklet written on birch bark by Potawatomi Indian Simon Pokagon
  • Artwork by Bodmer, Waldeck, Catlin, Burbank and Eastman, and American Indian ledger art
  • Manuscripts, portraits and printed books relating to major American Indian figures, including Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, and Sitting Bull
  • Modern manuscript collections such as “The Bureau of Indian Affairs relocation records” (1936-1975)

Three years in the making, AIHC is Adam Matthew’s second collaboration with the Newberry Library, following on from the OAT-winning American West, which presents sources from the Graff Collection of Western Americana. The two resources are cross-searchable, allowing students and researchers exceptional access to the two collections.
